FAQs

How often should I visit the dentist?

We recommend a dental check-up at least once every 6 months. A regular dental check-up will allow us to pro-actively screen for problems such as the condition of your gums and teeth, we look at your existing fillings, crowns and veneers and look for any changes to the lining of the mouth, so we can see them coming before things get to the point where they could cause discomfort, break or get more expensive!

How long is the initial appointment?

It may vary depending on your dental procedure but generally speaking, we want to check the overall state of your oral health so the first appointment often takes a bit more time (please allow up to an hour) and involves a thorough examination, clean and x-rays.

What is a check up?

A regular dental check-up will allow us to screen for problems and see them coming before things get to the point where they could break or cause discomfort or get expensive! We will check the overall state of your oral health by charting the gums, looking at the jaw joints and lining of the mouth, and use x-rays to see where we can’t physically see.

Why do I need X-rays?

Many people would prefer to avoid dental x-rays because they don’t understand why they are necessary. Unfortunately only some dental conditions can be seen by the dentist and the rest are hidden beneath bone and enamel.

Dental x-rays reveal what’s happening out of sight and can help our dentists with diagnosing conditions such as dental decay, gum disease, bone problems, fractures, infection, cysts and tumours.

I’m scared... will it hurt?

This is a question we hear often, and it can stem from a negative experience in childhood or as a young adult. If you put off going to the dentist because the very thought of sitting in the chair brings you out in a cold sweat, don’t worry.

At New Farm Dental Studio, we pride ourselves on creating a welcoming and calm environment to provide the best patient care possible and help you relax.

Dr Mark’s friendly and compassionate nature ensures even the most anxious of patients will feel calm and in control during their visit.

If you are afraid of needles, you will be pleased to hear our dentists are gentle, even when numbing a tooth and any discomfort is minimal.

How old should my child be to start coming to the dentist?

We welcome patients of all ages and enjoy helping children develop a positive attitude about dentistry and looking after their smiles. From the time they get their first tooth, we encourage children to come in to experience a trip to the dentist. We find getting children used to dental visits from an early age will help your little one gain familiarity with the dental studio environment and help make future visits fun and stress-free.

Is teeth whitening safe?

You’ve probably heard stories of store-bought teeth whitening products that, when used frequently, can wear away enamel and cause sensitivity because they contain acidic substances that remove the surface of the enamel.

At New Farm Dental Studio we can safely remove stains and add some sparkle to your pearly whites. We offer tooth whitening options to suit all lifestyles and budgets. Both our in-house and take-home (Opalescence GO) whitening systems avoid abrasives and use a peroxide solution that bleaches away stains that results in a brighter smile.

What is a Dental Hygienist?

Our dental hygienists are registered dental professionals who are experts in their field of prevention and treatment of gum disease.

Traditionally cleaning, oral health education and dental therapy duties was all provided by a dentist but in recent years there’s been a shift towards these types of dental care being carried out by AHPRA registered professionals who are able to spend more time with patients and their individual needs.

Our dental hygienists clean your teeth and show you the best way to keep your mouth healthy. They also give advice on diet to prevent dental decay.

Is your practice accredited by the Australian Dental Association?

Yes! Unlike many other dentists, our practice is fully accredited by the Australian Dental Association (ADA). Going through this rigorous accreditation process is voluntary but we chose to get this stamp of approval from the ADA because we care. We care about you and are committed to delivering all our patients safe and quality-focused healthcare. If you would like to learn more about this extensive process, click here.

What is fluoride and why do you recommend it?

Fluoride is found naturally in water but is added to many toothpastes, mouthwashes and gels. Dentists are usually big fans of fluoride because it toughens the enamel and makes teeth more resistant to tooth decay and acidic erosion.

Do you accept health funds and use Hicaps?

While we are not affiliated with any specific health insurance fund, New Farm Dental Studio is HICAPS equipped for easy on the spot claims whoever your private health insurance is with. Remember to bring your private health fund card with you to your next appointment.
